Sport Leadership Grants and Scholarships for Women

The Sport Leadership Grants for Women program is an initiative of the Australian Government that is managed by the Australian Sports Commission in partnership with the Australian Government Office for Women.  The Sport Leadership Grants for Women provide development opportunities and training for Women to reach their leadership potential on the sporting stage as coaches, officials and administrators. The program has been in place since November 2002. Over the last seven years to September 2008 more than 15,600 women from across Australia have benefited from grants worth more than $2.4 million!

The mission of the Women and Sport unit is to foster a culture that actively advocates the enduring values of fair play and inclusive practices in sport, and promotes equality and respect for women and girls in all aspects of sport with the aim of creating a sporting environment that is more inclusive and supportive of the participation of women and girls.


 

Sport Leadership Grants

These grants are aimed at providing women in sport with support and access to leadership training and development opportunities to assist in establishing them in the sport industry.
Grants available in the following areas:

  • Coaching
  • Officiating
  • Governance
  • Management / Administration
  • Communications / Media / Marketing

Successful applicants will receive a one-off Sport Leadership grant of up to $5000 for individuals and up to $10,000 for organisations. In addition to their identified projects, successful individual applicants are expected to attend a two day leadership workshop covering a range of leadership and development topics, including effective communication, conflict resolution and influencing change.

All successful applicants will be involved in the evaluation of the grants program and contribute to its continual improvement.

Sport Leadership Grants - Individual

To be eligible to apply for a Sport Leadership Grant, individual applicants must be:

  • female
  • established in a paid or volunteer capacity in community sport;
  • available to attend an ASC Sport Leadership Workshop;
  • an Australian citizen or have been granted permanent residence status;
  • aged 18 years or more;
  • supported by a sporting organisation affiliated with a sport that is recognised by the ASC.

Sport Leadership Grants - Organisation

To be eligible for a Sport Leadership Grant, sporting organisations must be:

  • affiliated with sports recognised by the Australian Sports Commission;
  • available to attend an ASC Sport Leadership Workshop;
  • committed to support, encourage and provide appropriate ongoing opportunities for female beneficiaries of the grant.

Who can apply?

Women from all corners of the Australian sports community are welcome to apply. Women from culturally diverse backgrounds, Aboriginal women, rural and regional women and women with a disability are encouraged to apply. 

Grants are distributed nationally within an identified sport(s) to ensure the recipients have a pathway within their organisation. 

Applications for grants will open Early in the year. Applications usually will close Late April.

Applicants will be usually be advised of the success or otherwise of their application in June .

Examples of successful recipients of the grants:

  • Hayley, a CEO of a sporting organisation, used funding to attend an executive sport management program.  ‘The six day intensive residential programme focused on providing senior executives with the most recent sport management knowledge and skills which enhance our leadership capabilities, made our communication more effective and advanced and refined our negotiation and marketing skills.’
  • Katrina used the grant to complete a Level 2 Coaching Certificate for Basketball, this progressed her skills to coaching at the National Schools Championships.
  • 'The course itself was of high quality. The opportunity to network with other coaches and be exposed to alternative methods and view points was invaluable to my development as a coach.’
  • The Lakemba Sports and Recreation Club in Sydney received a grant to go towards training 60 women in a soccer coaching course. Significantly, all of the women are from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds where sport is not a traditional pathway for women.
  • The Garnduwa Amboorny Wirnan Aboriginal Corporation received a grant to conduct introductory basketball officiating courses throughout the East Kimberley region in Western Australia. The aim is to have 100 women graduate through the course.
